Calyptra
Calyptra is graphic novel that has been a work in progress for the past 3 years. Heavily influenced by Carmilla by Sheridan Lee Fanu, I wanted to make a story that was a little more obvious and could not be mistaken as friendship. A story about the bloody consequences of coming out and all the joys that come with community after accepting oneself.
(With a nod toward the homoerotic friendships that have destroyed us.)
The premise
Amelia Briar is out for blood.
Born to one of the most prestigious and wealthiest families in Bellwood, the family’s reputation rests on the shoulders of their eldest daughter. After her sister’s husband drains their wealth, it’s on Amelia to step up. The odds are in her favor. Percy Willoughby has been smitten with her since they were children. Percy is kind, handsome, the only heir to his father’s fortune– and Amelia wants absolutely nothing to do with him.
Amelia yearns to study biology, to become a scientist and do something worthwhile. Consistently covered in mud and foliage, with a penchant for collecting bones in the forest, Amelia does not do much for her family’s reputation other than tarnish it.
Alexandra is an alluring, mysterious stranger. Traveling on her own, Alexandra is independent and everything Amelia aims to be. Her beauty and warmth is enough to look past her quirks. After all, Amelia has plenty of them.
Amelia’s time is running out, however. After a series of murders strikes the town, she is faced with a decision she can’t bear to make.
So the decision is made for her.
Amelia embarks on a journey for vengeance, with the aid of a newfound mentor. She discovers what it means to love, and be loved in return. Including the horror and bliss that comes with it.
